College Laptop

An Apple laptop is a great choice for a college student. Once you decide between Mac or PC, you can look forward to a quality computer with great style out of the box. One of the advantages to purchasing an Apple laptop for college is that they have a very straightforward product model. There are three laptop lines:

  1. (White) Macbook
  2. Macbook Pro
  3. Macbook Air

Most likely, you'll be interested in the first two models, the Macbook and Macbook Pro. However, if you are looking to sacrifice computing power for style and wow-factor, keep the Macbook Air under consideration. Here's some detail on each model:

(White) Macbook

The Macbook is the lower-end product in the Apple laptop line. For clarity, let's call it the "White Macbook", seeing as its distinguishing feature is the laptop's white color. The White Macbook is great for any student who requires the basics: internet, word processing, email, etc. They come with a mid-range processor, hard drive, and graphics card. If you are looking to use your computer for performance-intensive tasks, especially those involving graphics, consider purchasing the Macbook Pro over the White Macbook.

Macbook Pro

The Macbook Pro is pretty much an optimized version of the Macbook. It is made from higher-end hardware, but in recent models there hasn't been as much of a distinction between Macbook and Macbook Pro internal hardware. However, the biggest deviation from the White Macbook is probably its graphics performance. The Macbook Pro models have better graphics chips and processors; they also feature a backlit keyboard and aluminum frame. Though these may seem like non-essential addons, Graphics Design majors and Communications majors may want to consider the Macbook Pro for its improved graphical and computing performance.

Macbook Air

The Macbook Air is probably the least popular of the Apple laptop line, and rightfully so. It features an extremely thin, light, and delicate design, in addition to a hefty price point. There aren't any particular performance advantages to buying a Macbook Air. The components are generally lower-end than even the White Macbook, and the laptop does not feature a Disk Drive (though an external drive can be purchased to make up for it). The Macbook Air user should not expect great performance, but can expect a lot of double-takes at the library in return for their investment in style.
